The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
