An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
